Bellingham, Washington – Join Mayor Mark Asmundson and other distinguished guests for the dedication of the new Depot Market Square in downtown Bellingham.

The City of Bellingham and Depot Market Square Committee invite the community to celebrate the completion of Depot Market Square.  A dedication ceremony is set for Saturday, July 8, 2006 at 12:00 at Depot Market Square, followed by a community celebration that evening featuring live music by The Atlantics from 7:30-11PM.  Depot Market Square is located in the 1100 block of Railroad Avenue in downtown Bellingham.

Mayor Mark Asmundson will lead the noontime ceremony in the pavilion, which will also include remarks from State Representative Kelli Linville, County Executive Pete Kremen, Bellingham City Council Member Gene Knutson and Depot Market Square Committee Chair Brian Griffin.  “The impact of this facility on the life and revitalization of downtown Bellingham will derive from the cumulative impact of all this lively community activity,” said Mayor Asmundson.  “And it will serve as a reminder of what we can achieve when we all work together.”

Depot Market Square has served as an excellent example of a successful public/private partnership.  The City partnered early on with the Depot Market Square Committee, a private group of citizens, to create a town square that would serve as a focal point for downtown and the emerging waterfront.  Funding for the project came from the City of Bellingham, Whatcom County, the State of Washington and over $340,000 in private donations from over 1,200 businesses, families and individuals.  In addition, a portion of the building, including all the arches, was constructed using steel recycled from a bridge in Skagit County.  Impero Construction of Bellingham served as contractor for the $2.5 million project.

In addition to being the new permanent home of the Bellingham Farmer’s Market, Depot Market Square is also available for rent for private and community events including parties, weddings, reunions, theatre and music festivals, sales, fundraisers and meetings.
