Bellingham Farmers Market Committees

The Bellingham Farmers Market prides itself as a member-run organization. Committees of the Board serve two principal purposes; (1) to present ideas and suggest possible solutions of governing the Market to the Board of Directors and; (2) to enhance the communication between the Board and Market Manager who would implement such policies as the Board directs. Through Committees, there are ample opportunities for vendors to volunteer their time in leadership roles to help shape the future of the association.

Below is a list of Committees and a general description of their responsibilities:

The Policy and Bylaws Committee works with the Board of Directors and other committees to annually review the Market’s Vendor Handbook of policies and procedures, Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. The Committee drafts proposed revisions and rationale for changes for Board and /or membership consideration and for approval at the Spring General Membership meeting. Then the Committee provides immediate notice of interim changes in the Handbook to the membership.

Budget and Finance BACK TO TOP
Prior to the Annual Spring Membership Meeting the Committee develops the Market’s annual
budget and submits it to the Board of Directors for approval. The Committee performs analyses and projections of Market finances and makes periodic reports and recommendations to the Board.

Marketing and Advertising BACK TO TOP
The Marketing and Advertising Committee develops, for Board consideration, an annual strategy and implementation plan for marketing the Market. The Committee develops an itemized advertising budget to be submitted to the Budget Committee and approved by the Board of Directors. The Committee prepares and conducts customer surveys periodically to evaluate the effectiveness of the marketing program. The Committee establishes programs for, and manages the merchandising of, products designed to promote the Market.

Festival and Education BACK TO TOP
The Festival and Education Committee works to increase public knowledge of local agriculture issues through special events, educational programs and workshops. The Committee makes recommendations to the Board concerning Market celebrations and other events involving or having an impact on the Market.

Craft BACK TO TOP
The Craft Committee advises the Board and makes recommendations relating to the Market's craft jury process and procedures. Craft Committee members recruit jurors and supervise the jury process as directed by the Board. The Craft Committee members generally make themselves available to help new craft members with advice and guidance.

Fundraising BACK TO TOP
The Fundraising Committee considers and implements ways to access the community to raise funds to build the Market's Capitol Improvements Fund. All plans are presented to the Board and approved by the Board before being implemented.

Staff BACK TO TOP
The Staff Committee formulates and implements plans for hiring new staff, when needed, upon approval of the Board. After submission of candidates, from the committee to the Board, the final interviews and hiring are conducted by the Board. The staff committee formulates job descriptions and evaluation criteria, to be submitted to the Board for approval.

The Site Committee develops, for Board consideration, recommendations and budget estimates for maintenance, repairs and improvements/additions to Market facilities. The Committee supervises Market maintenance and makes repairs and improvements as directed by the Board. The Committee advises and assists vendors who desire to install temporary displays, modified stall tables, temporary enclosures, etc.

Membership BACK TO TOP
The Membership Committee provides draft policies/decisions/actions that, in the committee’s view, are required to ensure an optimal mix of vendors and products at the Market. In conjunction with the Site Committee, by early February, the Membership Committee develops an annual Market map/site plan delineating general stall assignments by vendor category and half/full booths. This plan provides optimal product mix throughout the market and is submitted to the Board for approval. The Membership Committee maintains a current, accurate annual membership list and acts on behalf of the Market to acknowledge births, illness, deaths and other events within the Market vendor community.

Farm Committee BACK TO TOP
The Farm Committee reviews farmer related issues and makes recommendations to the board; Develops farmer leadership by recruiting farmers to serve on the board; Recruits farmers to vend in the market; Researches new crops that could be included in the market mix; and makes recommendations to the board regarding farm site visits.

The Wednesday Market Committee focuses on ways to successfully promote the Wednesday Market and increase customer awareness of that Market

Long Range Planning BACK TO TOP
The Long Range Planning Committee develops and maintains a mission statement. The Committee reviews and updates the business plan for the Market, which describes long range goals regarding market location, management structure, capital improvement budget and community relations. The Committee develops and maintains short-range plans that address Market options in facilities, location, timing and negotiations. Members to this committee are appointed by the Board of Directors.
