Volunteer at the Bellingham Farmers Market

Volunteering with the Market

Volunteers are essential to every aspect of our mission – from our hard-working board to those who help with set-up and clean-up. Without volunteers we can’t meet our goals of supporting locally grown and prepared foods by maintaining markets and by educating the public on the importance of buying locally.  If you are interested in lending your talents to our team, please email us at market@bellinghamfarmers.org.

Here are some things we need volunteers to help with:

Information Booth

Information Booth volunteers are the "face of our Market,"helping inform and direct customers, selling Market merchandise, and much, much more.

Skills Required: Excellent customer skills, positive can-do attitude, a great smile, the talent of being courteous to difficult people and the ability to remember lots of facts. Ability to stand for 5 hours (with breaks) is also necessary. Written material, maps and weekly updates are provided.

Minimum Time Commitment: Five hours at the Saturday Market

Chef in the Market Volunteers

Chef in the Market is a fun and interactive way for us to educate shoppers about the beauty of our local bounty by offering preparation tips and recipes for popular produce and “under-appreciated” vegetables (like leeks, rutabagas, celery root, and collard greens). Customers are able to watch a chef in action and ask questions. Volunteers help our chefs prepare for demos, prepare signage and interact with customers.

Skills Required: Love of food & cooking, interest in local agriculture, and ability to talk to the public. Volunteers interested in being a part of Chef in the Market should have a basic knowledge of food, cooking, and seasonal availability and be willing to obtain their Food Handlers Permit from the Department of Health.

Minimum Time Commitment: 2-3 hours the first and third Saturday of each month and occasional special events

Market Surveyors

The Bellingham Farmers Market is growing and we like to know what our customers are looking for, what they like and what they'd like to see more of.  We also like to keep track of our growth by counting our customers and surveying traffic flow through the Market.  Volunteers are needed to help with simply customer surveys (held appx. 3 times a year) and with counting customers.

Skills Required: Ability to stand for 1 hour at a time and ability to interact with customers

Minimum Time Commitment: 3 hours throughout a Market day; this job allows for lots of shopping time between shifts.

Office Assistants

The Market has recently graduated to an office and we need help getting organized.  We are busy during the week doing everything from data entry to making signs. Most of this work would be done in our offic, but some tasks can be completed in your home on your own time schedule.

Skills Required: Depends on the project.

Minimum Time Commitment: Varies with the project and very flexible.

Special Event Assistants

We have a vartiety of special events throughout the season from kid's vending days to special demonstrations.  You may be called on to decorate the Information Booth, set-up a stage, hang signage or many other myriad of tasks. We are searching for people who would like to be involved with the Market and are project oriented.  This position may involve some very early hours on Saturday mornings – 7:00 am. Or you may be working during the week to help us prepare for an event.

Skills Required: Creative and flexible.

Minimum time commitment: Usually a three hour shift at the market, but varies by event.

Archivist

We have 17 years worth of historic information we would like to organize, catalogue and protect.  If you are a detail oriented history buff, we could use your talents.  This position may work in our office and may be able to take some work home.

Skills Required: Detail oriented, organized and a self-starter.

Minimum time commitment: Flexible until project is complete.

Newsletter/Media Assistants

We like to make everyone feel like they are "in the loop."  We put out a weekly vendor update and a bi-monthly customer newsletter, among other updates with social media sites and press releases.  If you enjoy writing and are comfortable with web-based media, please consider this position.  This position can be done from home, although a few meetings in the office would be required.

Skills Required: Excellent writing and computer skills and a self-starter.

Minimum time commitment: Varies by project.
